Tangaroa Fish Market

Seriously craving good Kiwi fush n chups and thankfully LA has a few NZ foodie spots so I don’t miss home too much.
It’s a pretty casual spot, need to order at the window and pick your own seating. We had our puppy with us and it’s all outdoors so puppy friendly! We ordered the Fish & Chips, Fish Burger, Fish and Shrimp Tacos and Sake & Beer for drinks.
Fish & Chips ($20) – Super delicious fish and chips, the fish is
Fish Burger ($19) – These were really good and just the right size! I actually finished, well two of them and that’s pretty good for me.
Fish & Shrimp Tacos ($15ea) – Yummy cajun fries with extra, extra seasoning. Totally delish!
Sake & Beer ($12 & $9) – I liked the Watermelon drink, perfect for the OTT hot weather we were having.

Quantity 4/5 – Good portion sizes.
Ambience 3/5 – Super casual spot and dog friendly – typical fish and chips shop.
Service NA – Self-service.
Taste – 4/5 – Fish and chips were very good and loved the thick cut too. Order anything with fish and you’ll be good!
Parking – Street-parking nearby.

Tips:
⭐️ Recommend – Fish & Chips, Fish Tacos & Fish Burger and the tartar sauce!
💕 Chilled out and relaxed vibes, outdoor picnic tables and counter service
👚 Dress – Casual Az Mate
🍻 Happy Hour – 4-6pm
✅ Kid & Dog friendly

I am loving the number of Kiwi joints in LA – definitely an awesome decision moving here! The menu has a full on raw bar and is very seafood focussed but there’s also a NZ Lamb and Beef burger that I am looking forward to trying next time, as well as the potato fritter!

Ponsonby Road Cafe

I had a feeling LA might be the place to finally get a good meat pie – and I was totally right. It does help that the place is owned by a Kiwi, because you know New Zealand does the BEST meat pies.

We kind of got carried away with the number of options. Out of nowhere we had ordered 12 pies, not sure how that happened, but when you order 12 you get the 13th one free so it wasn’t such a bad thing after all. Ordered the Mince & Cheese, Steak + Cheese & Jalapeños, Butter Chicken, Chicken Curry, Chicken Veggie and Lamb Curry and a few Sausage Rolls as well.
Mince & Cheese ($9) – Hands down the best, this is one of my faves anyway but it needs to be done right – and these pies were perfect!
Steak, Cheese & Jalapeño ($9) – This one is a very close second to Mince & Cheese, it’s got a little bit of spice to it with the Jalapeños and is really good and flavourful, the meat is top quality too.
Butter Chicken ($9) – I didn’t enjoy this flavour as much as the others but it’s not bad, just the flavour of the Butter Chicken maybe. Pastry was great as usual.
Chicken Curry ($9) – Loved this, the chicken meat is great quality and really liked the addition of potato to the curry – super yum!
Chicken Veggie ($9) – A little bit bland compared to some I’ve had before. Definitely prefer the Chicken Curry out of the chicken pies available.
Lamb Curry ($9) – This was really good too. The lamb is again great and the flavour is tasty too.
Sausage Roll ($5) – OmG these are sooo good! Seriously, I’ve had a few from ahem Aussie cafes and some other places but something was always off. But this tastes great and the pastry is amazing. Love these.
Hot Cross Buns ($6.95) – These come in a set of 6 and they sell pretty fast so you need to come early to get them – and I mean early, not 11AM. Got them over Easter and it was perfect, reminded me of NZ 🙂

You can keep the pies in the freezer and chuck them in the oven at 375 degrees for 20-30 mins – this is the best method, don’t put them in the microwave!

The other flavours they have are Mince, Steak, Steak & Mushrooms, Steak & Onions, Steak & Cheese, Steak & Kidney, Lamb & Mint, Bacon & Eggs, Potato Top, Tofu Curry, Beyond Meat & Cheese & Beyond Meat & Veggie. But call before you head over to check what they have available.

Quantity 4/5 – Pies are good size, they come with a salad as well and dressing along with ketchup and habanero sauce. The sausage roll is good too. I know some Kiwis will be like $9 for a pie is a bit steep, but honestly Auckland prices are pretty up there now too, no more $3 pies.
Pickup 5/5 – Well obviously discovering a fellow Kiwi was a definite highlight, for the first time I think – other than people we already knew in USA.
As expected, that good old Kiwi hospitality, you know – proper customer service.  Jamie and his wife May are both super friendly and genuinely nice, as is the Kiwi way – it was the best experience. Appreciated the extra set of Hot Cross Buns too 🙂
Spice 2/5 – Jalapeño and Butter Chicken have a little kick, nothing out of this world 🙂
Taste 5/5 – Absolutely da bomb – amazing az pies. The pastry is perfect and everything is top quality.

I am over the moon about finding this place, so much so that we came back 2 more times in the same week. I can safely say I will be a regular here for my pie and sausage roll fix. Good location, although parking can be a bit hard sometimes. They do other bakery/cafe items too – paninis, toasts, latte etc, but I was here for the pies and it was truly the best. Total transportation back home!
