This was a completely random dinner. Just had drinks in city on Thursday catching up with friends and was round 8. I’d wanted to try the place as I’m on an endless search to find a degustation place in Sydney which is even half as good as French Cafe back in Auckland. Anyway, feeling hungry, we decided to bite the bullet and try it out. It was quite full but managed to get a place. We decided to go for the 8 course with matching wine ($150 + $90pp).
First dish, amuse bouche. This was foie gras in two different flavours. Red was definitely my favourite of the two, this had chilli and the other one contained hazelnut. The chilli foie gras had more of a kick to it and could have done with 4 of these instead of the hazelnut. Anyway, it was alright for a starter, nothing sensational.
I started this thinking I’d go through each dish but actually I won’t as the only one that was really good was the violet ice cream. This is probably their best dish. The food is well presented, the service is nice. Although a lot of the time I could barely hear the waiter and just politely nodded at what he was saying as I couldn’t be bothered to have him repeat what he had memorised. In any case, when you’re out for a fine dining experience and shelling out enough to do some serious shopping, you expect more. I’m glad I tried it, so now I know – there’s nothing memorable about it and wouldn’t go back again. Better to spend your $500 elsewhere. My search continues for a 5 star degustation.
Yoghurt + black olive + lemonade fruit – didn’t take a pic of this for some reason.
