Mamak

Mamak is another go to place whenever you have visitors to Sydney or just feel like good Malay food.  Can’t really go wrong with this place.  Seating isn’t that great and the lines are long but the food is good.  If you go at 5 sharp after work you don’t need to wait that long and we just went today (Sunday) around 1 and didn’t need to wait in line.  Ordered the roti telur ($8), mee goreng ($14), kari ikan ($18), sambal sotong ($18), ayam goreng ($16) and one rice, 3 drinks.  The roti telur as usual was great – this is egg roti and you need to order at least one of the rotis, I usually get this or the roti canai. The mee goreng is another standard dish, I prefer this to the maggi goreng option they have as the noodles aren’t as thick and feel I can make this at home with indomie lol. Kari ikan was decent, fish curry, nothing too special. Sambal sotong, stir-fried cuttlefish, this was really good.  It says fiery sambal sauce, but it wasn’t that hot, still really good flavour.  This was the first time I tried this dish, as well as cuttlefish, it’s similar to squid/calamari if you haven’t had it before.  Next time will try the same but with king prawns. Next the ayam goreng, basically Malay fried chicken. Wouldn’t rate this one, yes the chicken pieces are big but no flavour, just deep fry and lots of oil.  This does not compare to Belle’s hot chicken which I am currently waiting to re-open! This dish can be given a miss I’d say.  Had lime with syrup and 2 half coffee/tea drinks.  Total for 3 was $86.
Top dishes are – any of the roti dishes – you have to try at least one if you’re here.  Mee goreng and have now added the sambal sotong.  I’m sure the king prawn will be just as good but will update after I try it out!
